Yamaha YZF-R6R

When you already have a motorcycle like the 2007 Yamaha YZF-R6R - one of the most successful supersport inspired 600cc machines around, delivering class leading performance and setting the benchmark that the rest of the industry works to, you may be tempted to rest on your laurels, for a while at least. But not Yamaha.

Their designers and engineers share an obsessive pursuit of perfection, so it was only a matter of time before the new 2008 Yamaha YZF R6R raised the bar ever higher.

The tweaks to the awesome 2007 motorbike may seem slight - an extra 0.5mm thickness on the front discs here, a slight change in wall thickness on the chassis there - but put them all together and somehow they squeeze even more out of these incredible motorbikes, with more power right across the rev range and even stronger feedback from the frame.

There are some more obvious exciting changes too, including the addition of Yamaha Chip-Controlled Intake (YCC-I), an incredible conjuring trick of air intake funnels, which works with the chip controlled throttle (YCC-T) to deliver a mid-bogglingly precise mix of fuel and air. New pistons increase the compression ratio from 12.8:1 to 13.1:1, while a 30% larger exhaust connecting pipe improves the torque at higher rpm. Together they push the power to almost 200bhp per litre, delivering an awesome 133bhp at 14,500rpm.

The chassis on these new motorcycles has been similarly polished and refined to find the perfect balance of rigidity and strength, while the suspension has been subtly altered to give the rider maximum feedback. The hip position and handlebars both move forward by 5mm to enhance the connection between man and machine at the front end.

And is it all worth it? Absolutely! These new Yamaha motorcycles produce more power, more mid range boost, and sharper handling than ever before, making them the most extreme supersports bike Yamaha have ever conceived. And the scariest thing is, those same engineers and egg-heads are already locked away working on the 2009 machine. Be afraid, be very afraid!
