Bayliss out of retirement for Phillip Island
The World Superbike season is yet to get underway and already the drama has begun as a heavy fall from Ducati rider Davide Giugliano during pre-season testing has resulted in Superbike legend Troy Bayliss coming out of retirement to race this weekend!
The thousands of fans around the world who have dreamt of seeing the Aussie hero return to the top step may have to wait however, as Bayliss will face stiff competition as one of the strongest grids in WSB history will line up at Philip Island on Sunday.
Preseason favourite is undoubtedly Jonathan Rea who, having spent his entire career on a Honda, made the shock switch to the superior factory Kawasaki team – a move many are predicting will see him finally lift the coveted title. Rea’s teammate and former Champion Tom Sykes will be looking to secure his second crown however, after narrowly missing out on the title last year.
Reigning World Superbike Champion and honorary Brit Sylvain Guintoli moves to the PATA Honda squad, where he’ll partner reigning World Supersport Champion Michael van der Mark. Despite being underpowered in past seasons, the new EVO style rules should help the Honda run closer to the front.
The star of testing has been former British Superbike Champion Alex Lowes, who topped the final test on his aging Suzuki GSX-R1000. Fellow Brit Leon Haslam moves to the Red Devils Aprilia Racing Team while Chaz Davies remains with the Factory Ducati team and Leon Camier heads the MV Agusta team.
