The term ‘light weight’ is often used in a derogatory sense, but with the new 2014 Yamaha MT-07, lightness is a distinct advantage. At just 179kg wet, The 2014 MT-07 is around 20kg lighter than rivals such as the Kawasaki ER-6N and the Suzuki SFV650, and delivers more power and torque than the legendary Kawasaki Ninja 650 from almost 30kg less machine.

Not only does this lower weight make it a much more attractive proposition for newer riders, it also makes the 2014 MT-07 a wonderfully agile and manoeuvrable ride with a mass forward design that gives it a genuine presence on the road. Remarkably, the Yamaha designers have managed to achieve a muscular look, while still producing one of the most slim line chassis in its class.

Yamaha say that the MT-07 has been designed using their ‘crossplane philosophy’, which combines an uneven engine firing interval, with a crank angled at 270 degrees, to deliver punchy acceleration and endless linear torque across a range of revs. For riders this means you’ll always have the power you need, whenever you need it, whatever speed or gear you’re in.

The word ‘enjoyment’ comes up again and again in Yamaha’s brochure for the 2014 MT-07, and it’s easy to see why. Every detail of the bike has been carefully honed to put you in control and make you feel connected with the ride. Where others put power stats and screaming acceleration figures ahead of everything else, Yamaha have set out to achieve all of this with the focus firmly on the rider, rather than the reader of bike magazines. What’s more, very competitive pricing and excellent fuel economy ensure that your enjoyment is not spoiled by worries about the cost.

Highlights of this versatile mid-range naked machine include an all new 698cc inline twin power plant, 282mm front and 245mm rear disc brakes, lightweight ten spoke wheels and fully digital LED display.

In an era where more and more bikes seem to be aimed at a specialist niche in the market, it’s refreshing to see a machine like the 2014 Yamaha MT-07 that is so exciting, while remaining accessible and affordable to such a wide range of riders.
