Bikers 'can stay in London bus lanes'
Bikers allowed to stay in bus lanesAn 18-month experiment was carried out, allowing motorcycle helmet wearers to use the restricted highways in a bid to ease congestion.
"The chaos that was predicted by some doomsayers has clearly not materialised and, as I suspected would be the case, we have found substantial support for the measure," Mr Johnson commented.
Fears of an increase in cyclist collisions were unfounded and bikers saw their average journey times reduced by around a tenth, surveys of the trial found.
Allowing bikers to continue to use bus lanes is "fantastic news", added Chris Hodder of the British Motorcyclists Federation.
Steve Kenward, chief executive officer of the Motor Cycle Industry, also welcomed the announcement, saying it is a "positive step in the right direction".
Motorcycle bodies are now calling for dangerous junctions to be improved to further boost safety for all road users.
