New safety ratings for motorcycle helmets

New helmet safety ratings revealedRoad safety minister Mike Penning unveiled the new online resource from the Department for Transport, which contains the ratings of more than 200 lids under SHARP, the Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme.
The SHARP scheme uses a wide range of tests to provide bikers with more information in the protection they offer.
Each motorcycle helmet is given a rating of between one and five stars, allowing riders to compare styles across different price ranges.
"By making sure that motorcyclists have access to the best safety information, promoting further training and safe riding, and reminding drivers to look out for bikers I hope that we can improve safety for motorcyclists and reduce the number of tragedies we see on the roads each year," said Mr Penning.
The website also gives tips on finding the right motorcycle helmet and caring for it.
