Dani Pedrosa closed the gap on Jorge Lorenzo at the top of the MotoGP standings with victory at the Indianapolis Grand Prix.

The Repsol Honda rider won from pole, edging Spanish compatriot Lorenzo into second place on the podium.

Andrea Dovizioso was third on the Tech 3 Yamaha machine, while his teammate Cal Crutchlow crashed out from seventh.

Casey Stoner had his motorcycle leathers to thank for a fourth place finish as he rode despite suffering multiple injuries in a crash during qualifying.

"I'm extremely happy with this win and I really want to congratulate the whole team for the great job they've done this weekend," said Pedrosa.

"The bike worked perfectly. It was difficult at the beginning of the race because the pace was very strong from the start."

Alvaro Bautista was fifth on the Gresini Honda and Stefan Bradl sixth riding the LCR Honda, while Valentino Rossi finished seventh on the Ducati.

Lorenzo leads the standings by just 18 points from Pedrosa, with Casey Stoner in third.
