Hayden motorcycle clothing problem blows podium chance
Hayden's race at Indianapolis was ruined by a knee slider problemA problem with his motorcycle leathers left Nicky Hayden's podium dreams in tatters at his home race in Indianapolis.
The Ducati MotoGP rider had qualified third for the first time since he joined the Italian team, and was really hoping to perform strongly in the race until an incident on the third lap.
After losing some traction on the front wheel, the American's left knee slider got caught on a drain cover and was partially torn off, leaving a hole in his motorcycle leathers.
Without this protective balancing device on his left knee, he was unable to push as hard as he would normally, losing pace and places until he finally finished in sixth position.
"I haven't had this problem happen to me since I've been with Alpinestars. If it would have been the right side, maybe I could have been OK. I mean, at this level you can't have anything go wrong," he said.
Hayden will be joined at Ducati by Italian legend Valentino Rossi from next season.
