Rossi crashed more than once at Indianapolis

Valentino Rossi's motorcycle clothing got an extreme workout at the weekend as the Italian MotoGP champion made an uncharacteristic number of errors.

As the paddock pitched up at the famous Brickyard in Indianapolis, the normally assured Rossi ended up sliding on his motorcycle clothing more than once, as he crashed in the second qualifying session, qualifying phase and warm-up.

After these tribulations left him back on the third row of the grid come race day, he was pleased to finish fourth and show glimpses of his old form.

However, eventually his lack of fitness began to show in sweltering conditions, and he could not longer push at full pace.

"I did some good laps and I wasn't too far from the other Yamahas, but unfortunately in the end I had to stop pushing because I didn't have any strength left in my body," he said.

Rossi recently announced he would be leaving Yamaha at the season's end after seven years, in order to ride for Italian manufacturer Ducati.
