Safety group calls for debate on speed cameras
RoSPA wants a debate on speed camerasSpeed cameras may have been turned off up and down the country, to the delight of many in crash helmets, but the issue is still a hot one.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has called for an urgent debate on the future of speed-calming measures, claiming that the current situation will endanger the safety of those in motorcycle clothing and other road users.
Earlier this summer, the government announced it would be cutting central funding for speed cameras - a move which has seen many counties, such as Oxfordshire and Devon, turn off their devices.
But RoSPA, along with nine other motoring groups, believe that this could cause irreversible harm to national safety strategies.
The group said in a statement: "While public spending needs to be cut, cuts must be justified by evidence.
"Cameras pay for themselves and currently make an important contribution to achieving compliance with the speed limit."
