MCI mystified by electric bike exclusion
Electric cars are included in the plans, but whay aren't bikes? At a time when the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) is extolling the benefits of pulling on motorcycle clothing and swapping the car for a bike, the latest government decision has left the trade body perplexed.
Transport secretary Phillip Hammond has announced that motorists will be offered a Plug-In Grant of up to £5,000 to fund the purchase of an electric car - but two-wheeled vehicles have been specifically excluded.
This decision "defies logic", according to the MCI, which recently pointed out that commuters can save thousands of pounds and do their bit for the environment by investing in a bike and motorcycle clothing.
MCI chief executive officer Steve Kenward said that the biking exclusion is particularly short-sighted for a government which has made such a fanfare about decarbonising transport.
He added: "Electric bikes offer the congestion busting and time saving potential that all motorcycles offer, but with the added benefit of zero emissions.
"Instead of being ignored, electric bikes should be heavily encouraged by the new government."
