MCI: Bikers contributing millions to the UK economy
Bikers contribute millions to the economy through their hobbyBikers who regularly pull on their motorcycle clothing and take leisure rides are help to drive the economy in a big way, it is claimed.
According to the latest data from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI), leisure riding and motorcycle sport contribute added value of around £238 million a year to the UK economy.
In addition, tax contributions of around £100 million are made from the annual £500 million turnover the industry generates.
Sales of motorcycle clothing and merchandise helped to make the racing sector profitable, with visitors to the British MotoGP spending somewhere in the region of £16 million.
Touring bikers also spend a great deal on things such as expedition guides and support teams, bike hire, hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation.
"The motorcycle sport and leisure sector involves riders and non-riders and there are plenty of opportunities for UK businesses to capitalise on the bike pound," said the MCI chief executive office Steve Kenward.
Earlier this month, the MCI asked for government backing for the Wheels to Work scheme, which provides motorcycle clothing and bikes for those who do not have access to education or training because of transport problems.
