Dani Pedrosa's motorcycle clothing may have protected his body, but his pride was obviously hurt after crashing out at Laguna Seca.

After his now customary blistering start, Pedrosa slowly pulled away from championship rival Jorge Lorenzo and seemed uncatchable.

However, on lap 11 the Spaniard lost his front wheel entering the start of the uphill section and he and his bike skidded at speed into the gravel trap.

He told the MotoGP website: "It's extremely disappointing, obviously, but this can happen when you're trying everything to win.

"You have to push as much as you can and take risks - and I really wanted to win this race."

With Lorenzo taking an easy win, Pedrosa now languishes 72 points behind his compatriot in the standings. As they go into their three-week summer break.

Valentino Rossi returned to the podium in California, using specially reinforced Dainese motorcycle leathers to help his damaged right leg deal with the rigours of the circuit.
