Protective motorcycle clothing 'must be worn, even in the sun'
Bikers may be tempted to lose motorcycle leathers in summerBikers in Hertfordshire have been reminded of the need to keep wearing protective motorcycle clothing in the hot summer weather.
As the temperature rises, riders may be tempted to ditch the motorcycle leathers and motorcycle boots, in favour of jeans and trainers.
Yet according to Hertfordshire County Council, those who do are taking unnecessary risks with their safety.
"Leather clothing with armour is the best form of protection, but lighter trousers and jackets, reinforced with Kevlar, also protect well at lower speeds," said the council's executive member for highways and transport Stuart Pile.
He went on to add that motorcycle boots must be sturdy enough to protect both the foot and ankle, while motorcycle gloves must be worn to shield the hands.
Parents have been asked to make sure their children are properly attired for riding, while pillion passengers should also be dressed in appropriate motorcycle clothing.
It was recently announced that self-inflating suits such as those seen on MotoGP riders will soon be available in the UK.
