The ultimate budget big bike, the Gladius handles city commuting as easily as motorway distance; and with a naked style borrowed from Ducatti it does just as well standing still. And while they've clearly made some savings around the motorcycle to keep the price down to just over £4,500 they've hardly scrimped on comfort or performance.
There's little compromise at all in the power of this all-purpose motorbike. In fact, the 650 v-twin engine has been improved and up rated for the new model, with twin plug cylinder heads, a heavier crankshaft, and increased valve lift, giving it a nippy punch around town and a lively response once you open the throttle. And while you'll need to grease your leathers and assume a Tron-like riding position to achieve the claimed top speed of 130mph, you'll easily bend the law at 90 on the motorway without too much effort.
Read some of the reviews of the Gladius motorcycle and you could easily be underwhelmed, with words like 'wholesome', 'playful', 'easy' and 'relaxed' peppering the pages; but then that's largely what this bike is all about. These new motorcycles may not raise you from the dead on your Monday morning commute, but they'll guarantee to get you to work time after time, with less fuss, for less fuel, and with less hassle than most other motorbikes on the road. This isn't a bike you'd go out on a hot date with but it could be the bike you'd marry.
