The KTM 990 Superduke R has never been about making friends, if anything, quite the opposite. The ultimate bad boy of the naked motorcycle world, its purpose in life has always been to irritate the refined superbike fraternity, with all their sweeping sports fairings and sleek lines. Achieving much the same performance while riding little more than a frame has always been pleasingly rebellious.
So it is a bit of a surprise that the most noticeable change on the new 2012 KTM 990 Superduke R is the inclusion of a passenger seat. Perhaps KTM have cottoned on to the attraction that a bit of rough has for the ladies. Not that there is anything rough about the ride on KTM's naked flagship.
Their engineers may have reversed the power numbers, dropping from 132 hp to 123 hp, but this is more than compensated for by hugely improved torque across the range. Naked bikes are all about grunt after all, and what is 9 hp between friends compared to improved traffic light burning traction.
The KTM 990 Superduke R is in fact far more refined than it first appears. Like the black sheep of any high class family, its breeding remains unquestionable and is clear for all to see, despite the carefully crafted non-conformist appearance. The LC8 V twin engine, the sharp trellis frame, the special R chassis and the top of the range WP suspension all combine to give a responsive, rewarding ride with a surprising level of agility and precision for such a big beast of a bike.
KTM call the 990 Superduke R uncompromising, and that says it all. There have clearly been no holds barred in specification of equipment levels, nor in the ride quality or handling. The only question that remains is whether you are prepared to compromise your own fun on the 990 R Superduke by using the new passenger seat to share the thrills.
