Significantly more affordable than most GT or GS bikes, yet decidedly more flexible and versatile too, the KTM 990 Adventure R is one of the finest rides on the road, whatever that road may be. Put it on the smooth tarmac of the Autobahn, and it will cruise with the best of the sports tourers. Mix things up a little with your surface, and it will leave them for dead as it takes the roughest roads in its stride.
As you would expect from KTM, the 990 Adventure R is crafted without compromise, with a welded chrome–molybdenum steel chassis that is designed to be taut to deliver remarkable rigidity and ruggedness. Add to this a low seat position that creates a low centre of gravity, and you have a bike that is manoeuvrable and responsive, without ever feeling too light on its feet.
The stunning LC8 V-twin is now more powerful than ever, pumping out a meaty 113 hp and 74 ft lbs of torque to speed you on your way, thanks to an electronic Keihin engine management system controlling the fuel injection. Stopping is equally impressive, with Brembo brakes and WP suspension ensuring there are no surprises when you have to pull up fast.
The KTM 990 Adventure R has been described as ‘the most capable travel enduro in the world' and it's a description that's frankly hard to argue with. For while there may be bikes that are better at each of the things it does, there are few that do all of these things so well and still deliver such a great value touring ride.
