The KTM 200 Duke is a bike that a lot of people have been eagerly waiting for, especially after the success of the KTM 125 Duke. Developed in partnership with KTM's major stakeholder Bajaj Auto of India, this is a bike firmly focused on the booming bike markets of the subcontinent. But why let them have all the fun?
The KTM 200 Duke is a striking bike, stripped bare of pretension and pared back to basics in true naked bike tradition. But no frills don't mean no thrills. The power plant of its 125 predecessor has been fully revised for the 200 Duke, with bigger valves and piston and completely new twin camshafts, new crank drive, new exhaust and a new airbox.
The result is a remarkably smooth and surprisingly powerful 200 cc fuel injected four-stroke, with ready power across a range of revs, right through to that crucial top end grunt. Topping out at 85 mph and 25 hp, its power belies its slender frame, helped no end by a handy power-to-weight ratio thanks to its featherlight chassis and overall dry weight of just 126 kg.
What's more, the KTM 200 Duke also stops as impressively as it goes, with radially mounted Brembo four piston calipers squeezing the 280 mm front disc, and 43 mm WP inverted front forks with a full 140 mm of travel. Together they give you all the reassurance you need to push your Duke that little bit harder, enjoying all the power this smooth six speed has on offer.
Of course, with KTM's track record, the 200 Duke is far from no frills, boasting high quality components and first class engineering throughout to lift this bike into a league of its own. Light and nimble, yet strong and powerful, the KTM 200 Duke could well mount a serious challenge to top the 200 cc street bike category in 2012, and it will certainly give food for thought to its more established Japanese rivals.
