Who says that all learner bikes have to have low spec to match their low power? Well, the Yamaha YBR125 and the Honda CBR125 do for a start. Fortunately, the team at KTM doesn't share this thinking, and why should they? Why shouldn't new learners share the same pleasures of premium motorcycling that their more experienced, more powerful rider friends enjoy.
That clearly seems to be the ethos behind the KTM 125 Duke, a superbly equipped low power machine that rates high on just about everything else. With the 125 Duke, you get a great ride from the very first day, with all the reassurance of a machine that feels capable of handling much more power than the law allows.
KTM have not skimped at all in the spec of the 125 Duke, with big bike features such as 43 mm WP upside down front forks and Brembo four piston front brakes adding to the overall feeling of uncompromising build quality, which borrows heavily from further up the KTM range.
Phrases like ‘entry level' and ‘starter bike' fade away fast as soon as you turn the key on the KTM 125 Duke, as one of the most impressive instrument panels in its class lights up to welcome you aboard. And once you've passed your test, you can easily welcome friends on board too, with a generous seat and substantial frame that are more than able to support a pillion passenger.
The KTM 125 Duke provides a healthy top end of 78 mph from its 15 hp 124.7 cc fuel injected, dual overhead cam engine, and returns an economical 75 mpg. And while it may not be as cheap as some 125s, you certainly get value for money, giving you more than £500 change from the price of the nearest similarly equipped rival, the Yamaha YZF-125.
So why start out riding on a clunky, basic bike you'll long to move on from, when you could set off in style on a beautifully built KTM 125 Duke you may never want to leave.
At P&H Motorcycles we value the opinion of our customers and would especially welcome your feedback when it comes to the motorcycles you have or currently own.
