The KTM 990 Adventure's sporty sister

KTM motorcycles, based in Austria, launched its new range of Adventure motorcycles for 2008 in Fuertaventura, further enhancing its reputation as a leading innovator in this key motorcycle market.

The release of the 2008 KTM 990 Adventure caused quite a stir. This is a lightweight road bike that has the capacity to provide a great off-road experience, and also is perfectly at ease on a race track. Quite a combination.

Still, its sporty sister, the KTM 990 S Adventure managed to hog its share of the limelight, thanks to its racy design and additional modifications compared to the standard KTM 990 Adventure.

The two KTM motorcycles are built to the same basic design. Both have a superb electronic fuel injection system, ABS brakes provided by Bosch/Brembo, and a highly efficient regulated catalyser to minimise emissions. KTM has created the ultimate sporty on and off-road bike, without losing sight of the need to preserve the environment.

The KTM 990S Adventure also has some features that you might expect to find on a rally bike. It has a longer suspension travel and its 990cc engine gives more displacement than the engine in the KTM 990 Adventure. The advanced fuel injection system in the 990cc LC8 engine gives the KTM 990S Adventure a maximum torque of 95Nm at 6500 revs per minute – fantastic for such a lightweight, easily manoeuvrable bike.

Experienced riders reviewing the 2008 KTM 990 S Adventure for the first time have been pleasantly surprised at the new engine and brake features. The ABS system is fully controllable, and can be switched on and off with ease, keeping you totally in control.

The KTM 990S Adventure is fitted with Pirelli Scorpion tyres and is just at home on rough terrain as on a perfect road or track. A great additional feature, specifically for rider comfort, is the rubber damping on the foot pegs that prevent road vibration affecting your feet.

Overall, the KTM 990 S Adventure and the KTM 990 Adventure are both great bikes packed with excellent features. Whether you prefer the standard model or its sporty sister is down to personal preference – either one will be a great riding adventure.
