KTM 690 Duke

The KTM Duke 690 - a single cylinder power house

The introduction of the new KTM 690 Duke for 2008 is bound to excite motorbike enthusiasts everywhere.

KTM Motorcycles claim the Duke 690 is the single cylinder engine bike with the most power that money can buy. Quite a claim, but close examination of this great new sports motorcycle reveals nothing to dispute it.

The 2008 KTM 690 Duke is based on the vastly popular Superduke, with its 990cc V-twin engine, but of course, the 690 Duke has a slightly smaller 690cc engine. However, these things are all relative, and with an engine under you that can provide 65 brake horsepower, you will be very aware that the KTM Duke 690 is no weakling. The LC4 engine onboard the 690 Duke is the most up-to-date motorcycle engine and features the latest, state-of-the-art technology.

Keen to take account of practical problems in previous supermoto and duke models, KTM Motorcycles have used careful design to provide a larger petrol tank, giving the option of longer rides without the need to always be looking out for a petrol stop. Test driving the KTM 690 Duke is a real pleasure, and it's immediately obvious that the single cylinder engine ticks over smoothly and effortlessly. There is very little unwanted vibration from the Duke 690 engine, which accelerates and slows down very smoothly, travelling from the low revs into the highest revs with ease.

Another practical improvement on the 2008 KTM Duke 690 is in the design of the speedometer dial, which is now in digital rather than analogue format as it was in older Dukes. This increases its visibility and readability, particularly in low light conditions.

Like all KTM motorcycles, the Duke 690 has superb build quality and features a fine and light clutch, very effective Brembo brakes, and a catalytic converter to cut emissions to almost zero. This makes the KTM Duke 690 a bike that will be welcome anywhere in Europe.

Its suspension is just right, as you would expect from a WP system, making the 690 Duke stable and light, so you always feel safe. But what makes the Duke 690 stand out from other makes, is the ever-present knowledge that it's ready to respond if you want to really put it through its paces.
