After stepping back from the power games for a while, Kawasaki have returned in awe inspiring style with the new ZZR1400 – the world's fastest accelerating production bike. And clearly they have been very busy while they were away.
While it remains true enough to its proud predecessors to retain that key customer loyalty, the new 2012 Kawasaki ZZR1400 is different in so many ways. Different and better! Kawasaki claim that the improvements deliver ‘more torque at all revs' and that their new machine has ‘significantly more power in the mid to high revs range', yet for some reason they remain modest about the power output, listing it at just over 190 hp – considerably short of the 200 hp benchmark that many had hoped for. Having said that, they do quote the torque as 113 ft lbs – a scary 18 ft lbs or 19 % more than the stunning Ducati Panigale.
Despite the disappointment of the hp, the Kawasaki ZZR1400 is still an impressively powerful machine, and significantly better than previous models. The engine size has been increased by almost 90 cc to a whopping 1441 cc, while the frame and drive have been modified to cope with the extra power this delivers, and the suspension stiffened front and rear to deliver a firmer, sportier ride.
More importantly, it now has traction control to help stop it from simply taking off as it reaches escape velocity. The Kawasaki Traction Control system on the 1400 Kawasaki ZZR has three modes, including two for all-out power and one for more conservative conditions. There are also two modes to the power selection, with the lower setting limiting power to just 75 %, and delivering a slightly softer throttle response. That said, 75 % of the fastest acceleration in the world is still brain-meltingly powerful, so you should take nothing for granted.
There may have been many pretenders to the throne in Kawasaki's absence, but they are undeniably back in charge with the 2012 ZZR1400. Ride ‘em and weep!
