It's fair to say that the Kawasaki ZX-10R that turned heads and twisted minds when it was first launched eight years ago has fallen back into the pack in recent years. But Kawasaki has more than set that right with the latest model. The all new Kawasaki ZX-10R takes you back to the way things should be, with you out front and clear of the chasing hordes.
The 2012 Kawasaki ZX-10R packs a mighty punch, just 2.7 hp short of the magic 200 at 197.3 hp, and throws down up to 82.7 ft lbs of torque to power you along across the rev range and through the gears. This is all thanks to a brand new power plant that offers improvements all round compared to the comparatively lazy previous model. New gearbox, new offset cylinders and new dual-butterfly injectors all combine to squeeze as much as possible from the 998 cc engine, while the fully fuelled weight of under 200 kg ensures a thumping power-to-weight ratio for all that grunt.
The new Kawasaki ZX-10R also boasts an impressive three setting traction control system to keep that power smoothly applied, perfectly balancing acceleration and traction every 5 milliseconds through a mind-blowing series of calculations. That said, if you prefer to ride by the seat of your pants without electronic help, you can always engage the fourth setting by switching it off, although with a top speed of 184 mph, you'll probably need all the help you can muster.
As ever, the Kawasaki ZX-10R is predominantly designed as a road bike, with Showa 43 mm BPF forks on the front and a horizontally mounted rear shock joining forces to provide a smooth, responsive ride and agile handling. However, it will still hold its own on the track on those wonderful occasions when you can switch the LED dash display to race mode and let rip.
With Kawasaki back in front, it's time for the rest to play catch up once again.
