Motorcycle classes and categories are a weird and wonderful thing these days, as proved by the Kawasaki Versys 1000. Kawasaki claim that it is the world's first four cylinder adventure bike, yet it has little or no off road capability, especially compared to the mighty BMWs that top the class. Ewan McGregor would soon come unstuck in the African swamps if he chose the Kawasaki Versys 1000. Yet that shouldn't stop you from setting off on your own adventure on this completely remodelled Z1000, because it's well worth the trip for the engine alone.
Kawasaki engineers have taken the Z1000's 1043 cc power plant and tweaked and twiddled it beyond recognition for the new model. They've lowered the compression ratio, changed the cam timing and fiddled with the combustion chambers, to create an impressive improvement in low rev torque, at the expense of just a little top end power. And it's a more than fair trade off. Faced with a long adventure trip in varying road conditions, I know which I'd prefer to have at my disposal.
The Kawasaki Versys 1000 has wider gear ratios to help stretch out the fuel economy, giving you up to 250 miles between stops, while improving rider comfort to exceptional levels to ensure you can ride that long without needing a break. They've also added Kawasaki's exceptional new KTRC traction control, and its three riding modes are particularly useful for this style of riding.
Fortunately, in their bid to take on the German adventurers, they have not forgotten what makes Kawasaki bikes so much fun. The 2012 Kawasaki Versys 1000 comes with exactly the blend of power and agility that you would expect from a Japanese litre bike, producing 116 bhp and 75 ft lbs of torque to cruise comfortably around the ton and only top out at 140 mph.
The 2012 Kawasaki Versys 1000 will not be for everyone, and there are some critics who wonder exactly who it is aimed at, but there is no denying the quality, value and exceptional engine of this fascinating new machine
