Sure, you can ride the 2012 KLX 250s to work on the dual carriageways, by-passes and heaving city streets. With a fuel economy up around 60 mpg, and the kind of manoeuvrability that modern commuter riding demands, you'd be mad not to. But that's not the real reason for buying this brilliant bike.
That comes with the weekend, when you leave the tarmac behind completely and take off along the trails in search of adventure. There are many bikes that can cope with commuting, but few that can take a ride on the wild side with quite the style and poise of the KLX 250s. This is a machine built to bring it on, from the narrow tank that enhances your control, to the mighty suspension, with no less than ten inches of travel to soak up the roughest of off-road conditions.
Every aspect of this dirt devil has been engineered to tackle the toughest terrain. 43 mm inverted cartridge style front forks and Uni-Trak rear suspension can both be adjusted 16 different ways, to suit your style and trail conditions precisely; petal-shaped discs front and rear keep you firmly in control, and even the seat shape has been designed to make it easier for you to shift around as you adapt to your territory.
The KLX 250s is high revving and full of torque, yet retains a low centre of gravity and short wheelbase, making it so much easier to handle. Even the footpegs are carefully placed close to the centre line, to help with the twists and turns that trail riders love so much.
And yet somehow, despite its thoroughbred off-road credentials, when it comes to Monday morning, it will still be ready to behave itself, sharing your double life and whisking you to work with a six speed, single cylinder smoothness worthy of any standard commuter bike. Just make sure you park it within view of your desk, to remind you of where you'd rather be.
