Kawasaki Versys
Launched at the end of 2006 and based on the ER-6 Kawasaki motorcycle, the Kawasaki Versys (short for “Versatile System") lives up to its hype: although not a dirt bike, it's a versatile and easy to ride all-round motorcycle that handles well on a variety of terrains. As with previous Kawasaki motorbikes from recent years, the Kawasaki Versys has the same 649cc parallel-twin engine that is tuned to be able to respond at any r.p.m. It's also extremely fuel-efficient, with an ability to cover more than 300km on a full tank. The engine is compact, which makes for a small wheel base and narrow frame to give the bike excellent ground clearance. The long travel suspension and forward-rear balance of the Versys are designed to respond to the rider's weight shifts, making this an exceptionally intuitive bike to ride. Like the ER-6, the 2008 Versys boasts an aluminium gull-shape swing arm, but the distinctively-styled body panels and headlight pod give the bike an even more updated look. The tall seat and relaxed positioning allows for maximum visibility and the three-way windscreen offers optimal wind and weather protection. A significant difference in the 2008 Versys from previous Kawasaki motorbike models is the redesigned suspension that's fully adjustable via its upside-down front forks. Fork height can be adjusted through a range of 8mm. The rear of the Versys contains an all-alloy swing arm instead of the tubular steel used previously. With a cruising speed of 150km/h, the Kawasaki Versys is an impressive mid-range power bike that balances powerful feeling with a quick-revving character. Overall, it's compact and fuel-efficient and is perfect for city and back-road driving.
