Not everyone is quite ready to take the Long Way Round on a bike so big they could never lift it, let alone afford it. Yet many of us still have a yearning for a taste of that adventure sports lifestyle where you sit up high and let the suspension dive low.
That's why Honda have introduced the NC700X, a bike they call the ‘Fun Crossover' and which is the little brother to their revolutionary Crosstourer concept. Unlike the bigger bike, the Honda NC700X has its feet firmly on the ground, combining the toys you need for a bit of off-road fun with the serious business of day-to-day life.
On the one hand, you have the long travel suspension, low centre of gravity and low rev torque you need for a little off-road adventure, but this is not at the expense of the performance and comfort you need the rest of the time. The NC700X even has storage space for a full faced helmet – not exactly hardcore, but very useful when you're out and about.
As you would expect from Honda, the NC700X is packed with technology, including combined anti-lock braking (C-ABS) and the option of Honda's dual clutch transmission, allowing you to change from manual to automatic at the flick of a switch as your mood, or the driving conditions, dictates. What's more, it delivers almost 80 mpg, cutting the cost of your commuting and leaving you more to spend on those weekend sorties.
With the liquid-cooled 670 cc power plant delivering a modest 51 hp and 46 ft lbs of torque, the 2012 Honda NC700X won't be rewriting any record books just yet, but at the same time it won't put you into the sort of debt the bigger bikes would either.
At the end of the day, just like life, the sensible has to triumph over the ideal for most of us, but that doesn't mean we can't still have some fun along the way. And with Honda's ‘fun crossover' you'll get that with every trip.
