Honda may be many things: innovative, adventurous, driven and open minded, but one thing they aren't is stupid. So when it came to creating the 20th anniversary edition of their famous CBR1000RR Fireblade – the superbike that started it all – they weren't about to make wholesale changes. After all, the Honda Fireblade is a legend in its own lifetime, with legions of dedicated fans, so too much tinkering could easily be seen as heresy.
To avoid having Honda HQ stormed with lighted torches and pitchforks, the engineers have gone for what they call a ‘natural evolution of Super Sports' rather than any major changes. Yes, there is new suspension front and rear and new toys on the already mind boggling instrument panel, but the spirit of the original Fireblade remains intact, and the ride is every bit as smooth and powerful as ever.
There have been many imitators over the last twenty years, and to Honda's credit, they have not spoiled the 2012 Honda Fireblade in an attempt to match them for power or technology. Instead, Honda have stayed true to the principles of fun, easy riding, forgiving handling and impeccable balance, which have become the hallmark of this immensely popular bike.
The result is better handling than ever before, with improved traction and braking too. Throttle performance in the first 25 % has also been tweaked, giving smoother power throughout the range, topping at 175 hp and 82 ft lbs of torque. The new suspension includes the innovative Balance Free Rear Cushion, a first for a production motorcycle, which combines with new Showa BFP front forks to enhance the 2012 Fireblade's ride and reputation still further.
It's no easy job trying to appeal to the loyalty of 20 years worth of fans, while still moving your design forward to keep it competitive and contemporary and appeal to the next generation too. However, by choosing evolution over revolution, Honda has pulled it off in some style with the 2012 Honda Fireblade.
