As any Ducati motorcycle sales person or informed enthusiast will tell you, the Ducati 1198 is simply a World Superbike with lights.
As 2009 is a year for belt tightening, Ducati are playing their part and the 2009 Ducati 1198cc is lighter than any previous motorbikes in the Superbike series.
The weight loss has been cleverly achieved; the 1198 engine is 3kg (6.5 lbs) lighter thanks to a revolutionary vacuum die-cast process used to cast the crankcases, and the use of magnesium-alloy valve covers.
There are other places where the Ducati 1198 has slimmed down from its predecessors while not affecting the suspension, Trellis frame, or geometry. The designers have saved .54kg (1.2 lbs) by redesigning the headlamps, fitting 10-spoke forged-aluminium wheels and Pirelli's wonderfully grippy Diablo Supercorsas SC tyres, which all helps the 1198 to tip the scales at just 188.8 kg (412 lbs). So it's no wonder this marvelous motorcycle shifts like it's been shot from a supergun.
The Ducati 1198 is undoubtedly an insanely fast motorbike, but it's a bike with good manners and is designed to take care of you. Ducati themselves say that the 1198 has "engineering solutions taken directly from the World Championship winning 'R' model of Troy Bayliss," and that the 1198 has more feedback provided by a works rider than any other motorbike has ever had.
