ATTACK THE CURVES, THE BUMPS, THE UNEXPECTED
Riding the Hypermotard lets you rule the road. Wide, tapered section handlebars transfer control of the tarmac to the rider and a full length seat eases fore and aft movement – up front when entering the turns, then slide back for maximum traction on exit.

A rigidly triangulated Trellis frame and track-tested chassis geometry is matched with state-of-the-art suspension. Start off with the road-holding prowess of huge 50mm Marzocchi forks, gripped by a triple screw lower fork crown. These forks work as impressively as they look, with special high rigidity stainless steel sliders and external adjustability for compression and rebound damping, plus spring pre-load. The rear suspension performs with equal precision by using a fully adjustable ZF Sachs shock mounted to a robust single-sided swingarm.

Light Marchesini wheels mounted on large diameter axles are fitted with Z-rated Bridgestone BT015 tyres sporting a fat 180/55 section on the rear. Stopping power is controlled by twin radially mounted Brembo four piston calipers gripping new lightweight 305mm twin discs up front, and a 245mm disc at the rear to make stopping as thrilling as gassing it.

The new 1100 Desmo engine pumps out potent torque and horsepower. Twist the throttle and no matter the rpm, fuel injected power is at the rider's command. The lightweight, 90 degree Twin stands at the pinnacle of more than three decades of Desmo air-cooled development. One ride makes it clear why the 1100 engine has charmed journalists worldwide. This is the perfect motorcycle engine.
I traded in my '02 Blade with 34k miles on the clock (owned from new) for the HYM. I have to admit, that despite my test ride, I was concerned that I'd get bored with the lack of power compared to the Blade.
I've had the HYM 6 months now, done 4k miles AND I AM NOT bored - far from it. I've gone from headcase (Blade) to hooligan (HYM). This is a bike that really asks you to take liberties all over the place. Yes, it hasn't got the balls-out straight line acceleration or top speed of the Blade but the torque and available power, combined with light weight and riding position just give (s)miles of fun. I have to say, most of the time now, I am riding faster than I did on the Blade. Throwing it around seems much easier due to the riding position and the wide bars - its also easier to move yourself (and your weight) around more.

I could eulogise all evening about the HYM, but it does have some downsides too. Like any unfaired bike, its a pain (in the neck) to ride for any distance at a constant high speed (e.g. >90 mph on motorways). Also, the tank size @12.5L causes frequent stops, especially if you are caning it - but then again enforced stops are good to get the adrenaline under control.

I've added a few extras, the main expense being the full 2-1 Termis system. Next up is getting the suspension set up (as consistently recommended by Marcus - who hasn't been wrong in his advice to me yet).

To all sportsbike riders who are considering a change, I'd definitely recommend getting a HYM test ride. For the rest of you reading this, unless your only road riding is touring then I'd definitely recommend getting a HYM test ride. My only caveat is that the harder you ride it the better it gets.

Producing a large range of racing-inspired motorbikes, Ducati is an Italian motorbike manufacturer best known for its V-twin sportbikes that it first began producing in the early 1970s. Today, Ducati still produces superior bikes in several distinct categories: Street fighter, Superbike, Multistrada, SportClassic, Hypermotard, and Ducati Monster. P&H Motorcycles offers a wide range of new Ducati motorcycles in all these categories.

Highlights for 2009 include the new Ducati Monster 1100 with its balance of stunning looks and sports performance: the 1100's engine produces a staggering 79.5 ft per lbs of torque at 6000 rpm. Then there is the Streetfighter 1098S, a Ducati bike which translates track bike technology - namely its data management system and traction control system – into a superior road bike. With impeccable suspension and lightweight chassis components, the Ducati 1098S has a dry weight of only 169 kg but still produces an impressive 170 bhp.
