Honda continues its experiments with crossover styling for 2012 with the remarkable Honda Integra, the ultimate scooter / motorbike crossover. Boasting the same 670 cc in line 2 cylinder engine as the ‘fun crossover' NC700X, and the ‘fun naked' NC700S, the Integra delivers real motorcycle power and performance, yet retains all the comfort and commuter savvy of a scooter. Strangely enough, Honda haven't given the Integra a ‘fun xxxxx' sub heading, despite the fact that it could be the most fun of all the three new models.
The real trick to making the Honda Integra a success was deciding which components to keep as scooter and which as motorbike, and Honda appear to have made the right call every time. From the motorbike side we have full sized, 17” wheels, with grippy 320 mm wavy discs with three piston calipers to the front, and a single piston 240 mm wavy disc to the rear. You also get Honda's combined anti-lock braking (C-ABS) and state-of-the-art dual clutch, offering automatic and manual options. Put these together with the 51 hp of power and 46 ft lbs of torque and you get very un-scooter like performance indeed.
Yet the Honda Integra delivers the best of scooter style too, with a very comfortable, upright seating position, feet forwards stance, fairing protection and buckets of storage. It also shares the scooter's nippy, responsive handling and low centre of gravity, making it an ideal and agile street machine.
The Honda Integra is a bike with a very broad appeal, attracting both those who want to take their scootering a little more seriously, and those who perhaps want to take full-on motorcycling a little less seriously than their maniac naked bike counterparts. And with fuel economy approaching 80 mpg and a tank range of up to 250 miles, that appeal gets wider still.
So next time you pull up beside a scooter at the lights and smile wickedly at your dominance, just make sure it's not an Integra, or you could be the one left standing.
